Maintenance Tips for Fall to Reduce Business Insurance Claims Around Your Building

Cleaning roof gutterWhen the seasons change, business owners need to consider updating their maintenance schedules to ensure every task gets the attention necessary. During the fall and winter months, there are increased risks to most businesses because of the risk of ice, snow, wet conditions, and even blowing leaves. If you have not updated your maintenance lists just yet, now is the time to do so. By keeping your property in good working condition, you can ensure that your employees and customers are safe, minimizing your liability risks. And, you may keep your property in good condition, too.

What Do You Need to Plan for Now?

During the colder months, it becomes increasingly important for companies to have an updated maintenance list that addresses their specific areas of concern. These tips are often at the highest level of concern during the fall months and need to have a plan in place for them.

  • Keeping walkways clear is important. Whether they are leaves or snow, it is essential to ensure all walking surfaces leading to the building are in good condition and clear.
  • Fall is a good time to update any cracks or uneven areas of pavement as well. Consider updating your pavement to address key areas where people can trip especially if walkways have leaf debris.
  • Take a look at the gutters and roof now as well. When it rains, if water does not flow away from the structure and walking surfaces, it can pose a safety risk. Additionally, if it freezes, it can create an area that is hard to keep ice-free. Have a professional roofer inspect the roof to ensure there is no risk.

Fall is also a good time to look at other areas that could create a problem. Ensure the roof isn’t leaking and causing interior water damage. Create a maintenance plan for keeping wet floor signs in place throughout the season. You’ll also want to consider any other areas of your business property that need maintenance now. When you update your maintenance tasks, you can help to reduce the risk that you may have to file business insurance claims against your policy. Take a few minutes to walk around your property and make a list of things to update.
