Spring Swing Set Checkup

Child on a SwingMany areas of the country experienced a tough winter. Significant snow and record cold temperatures have caused damage to roads, plants and homes. Now that spring is here and the snow has melted, many homeowners are assessing the winter damage. If you own a swing set, don’t forget to give it a checkup this season as well.

Inspect

You should inspect your swing set to verify it is still safe for children to use. Look for signs of deterioration such as:

  • Rust
  • Cracked beams that provide structural support
  • Peeling paint or weathered stains that may mean the wood is no longer properly protected from the elements
  • Missing parts
  • Loose fittings
  • Dangerous debris or items in the play area
  • Weakness or cracks in any ladders or climbing structure

Annual Maintenance

You will probably need to add wood chips or mulch each year to maintain the proper depth for safety. Consider applying stain on a regular basis to protect exposed wood. Also verify that your children are still the correct size for the swing set. Do they exceed weight limits?

Safe Use

Throughout the spring, summer and fall you should supervise your children while they play on the swing set. Verify they are playing safely, not recklessly. All aspects of the swing set should be used as intended. Also be aware that on hot days, metal or plastic surfaces may become too hot. Slides, in particular, have been known to cause burns when they are too hot. Check the equipment before letting your children play.

Installing a swing set in your yard is a great way to provide your children the opportunity for active, fun play at home. They will likely enjoy having friends come over and play on the swing set as well. If you have installed a swing set during a previous year, it is worthwhile to spend a few minutes each spring inspecting the equipment to make sure it survived winter adequately.

Following the above safety tips will help ensure that your children and their friends enjoy the equipment year after year with minimal risk of injury. However, in the event that a guest does get injured, the liability coverage in your home insurance policy can help pay the child’s medical expenses.
